Thank You for Being a Trend(spotter)

Predicting trends and which ones will stick and grow over time can be trickier than forecasting the weather.

With the launch of a new video series as part of its Culture & Trends reports, YouTube hopes to help marketers and creators better understand what’s holding viewers’ attention on the platform. Hosted by popular creator Jade Beason, the first installment of the series showcases five trends currently emerging on YouTube — from AI-powered virtual humans to celebratory nail art. The series also features key takeaways for each trend to help marketers and creators better connect it to their brand.

And while it's fun to believe YouTube has a team of psychics at work, the series is actually the result of data that is closely analyzed by culture and trend experts.  Identifying trends of the moment is a smart way to insert your brand into a broader conversation and demonstrate relevancy.

TL;DR: YouTube’s new monthly series highlights emerging trends on the platform and gives insight on how to capitalize on them.

Looking for more resources to tap into the latest trends? Tier One’s monthly trendspotting newsletter —  What’s Next, Now — is your cultural crystal ball.  Make trendspotting a core component of your social listening strategy so you’re prepared to leverage trends while they’re hot.

Big Brands Ban AI Tools

The rise of the machines might sound like science fiction, but a recent spike in generative AI technology has some big companies going to battle against our would-be robot overlords. In recent weeks, several major brands have introduced policies prohibiting employees from using AI tools at work:

  • Samsung
  • JP Morgan Chase & Co.
  • Citigroup
  • Goldman Sachs
  • Bank of America
  • Wells Fargo & Co.
  • Verizon

Bonus: Universal Music Group is calling on streaming platforms to ban AI-generated music due to copyright infringement.

These bans are a good reminder to consider implementing policies to mitigate risks posed by the tech. Carefully experiment with AI to find the most strategic uses without compromising security and ethics.

TL;DR: Some companies prohibit employees from using AI tools at work. Use a critical eye when implementing the tech.

From Uncertain to Unstoppable

In its new original video series Catalyst, LinkedIn puts the spotlight (and camera) on everyday professionals who found new beginnings after facing big setbacks. A prison sentence, a business loss, and tough feedback from a boss are just a few of the first-person accounts featured in the campaign. Catalyst is being led by long-time CNN vet Courtney Coupe, who has been in charge of the platform’s original content for several months.

Not only is the debut of this series timely as unemployment recently reached its highest level since 2021, it strategically positions the networking platform as the nucleus of professional content, something that has set it apart from other social media leaders like Twitter and Facebook. LinkedIn continuously sees user growth and record engagement, and this engaging original content may help cement its success.

What kind of original content can your brand create to similarly position itself as a thought leader? Consider taking tips (or a clip) from LinkedIn, and tailor this strategy to best suit your brand.

TL;DR: LinkedIn’s new original video series Catalyst shares the stories of everyday professionals who triumphed over adversity.
