What Lit Us Up#BettyWhiteChallenge: Accepted 🐶Leave it to Betty White to have the most meaningful (and often adorable) legacy. Following the television icon’s passing, people took to social media to celebrate her life — and love of animals — and thus, the #BettyWhiteChallenge came to fruition.
The challenge? Give to your local animal shelters on January 17 (which would have been Betty White’s 100th birthday). Sure enough, Betty’s birthday rolled around, and animal facilities were flooded with donations. One humane society in Canada raised more than $90,000 in its #BettyWhiteChallenge (and even named one of its furry friends Mr. Betty White). Dozens of animal rescue organizations across the country saw similar success, from Boston to Nashville. And brands joined in too. Purina and Petfinder donated $15,000 to Actors and Others for Animals, where Betty White served as director on the board, and to the Petfinder Foundation. The challenge hashtag allowed shelters and animal-lovers to share their stories across social media (and caught the attention of major news outlets).
It’s unclear exactly who came up with the challenge, but as soon as the hashtag was trending on Twitter there was no turning back. With a legacy as powerful as Betty White’s and a good social cause, you don’t need much more than a hashtag. For brands looking to build a simple but effective hashtag campaign (without the starpower), a straightforward, clear objective can have a real impact. Sometimes less is more.
If there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s giving Betty White the legacy she deserves.
TL;DR: The #BettyWhiteChallenge left local animal shelters flooded with donations in honor of the TV icon. Don’t underestimate the power of an uncomplicated goal, and a meaningful issue will always resonate. (Was this email forwarded to you? Sign up here.)
